Over the past few months we have received numerous comments and complaints nationally, from both our NHS hospital and private practice members, that their patients are experiencing difficulty in obtaining prescriptions when their doctor attempts to create an electronic version. It would appear that, sometimes, only two colours of the chosen brand are available instead of the full range, or that the products are not listed at all! The situation has baffled us as well as the distributors of Covermark, Dermacolor, Keromask and Veil.
BASC decided to investigate further by discussing the problem with our local Boots Pharmacist who came up with a probable explanation. There are various software programmes in use to create electronic prescriptions. Each Primary Care Trust buys its own programme and therein lies the problem because there is no single software programme that lists everything available on the current Drug Tariff, MIMS, etc.
Products marked as ABCS (Approved By the Committee on Borderline Substances) means they are available, at doctor’s discretion, on prescription (Form FP10). Borderline Substances also include items such as sunscreens, emollients, nutritional aids, etc. However, because there is no national (or even local PCT) agreement of opinion, some doctors interpret the ‘Indications’ to be the finite guide and only prescribe for those mentioned. Had they checked the Drug Tariff they would have seen that there is no mention of any dermatosis and scarring at all which indicates that there are no restrictions other then the known contra-indications.
Within Great Britain four brand names are currently listed in the Monthly Index of Medical Specialities (Borderline Substances) – that is circulated to the medical profession and pharmacies. This means that the products have been scrutinised by the Advisory Committee on Borderline Substances at the Department of Health for reimbursement on Form FP10 (which is a Doctor’s Prescription).
These brands may also be prescribed on a hospital prescription if the product is listed on the hospital’s formulary. However, Borderline Substances are at the doctor’s discretion, and it may be that some doctors will refuse to write a NHS prescription for camouflage creams and setting powders.
However these four brand names are also available from direct sales (without prescription) they are:

Please note
We have been informed by Pierre Fabre (20.10.08) that with immediate effect the camouflage range known as Couvrance has been removed from the UK market but remains available in France.
The BASC have not received reports that camouflage products encourage comedones or adversely affect any non-infectious dermatosis or scar tissue. But, as with all products, if there is any allergic reaction, the product must be removed and the affected area thoroughly cleansed.
Decorative cosmetics can be applied over correctly set camouflage.
